Rinse and recycle campaign

Date published: 23 January 2017

Pakistani & Kashmiri Community Association (PKCA) held a series of recycling awareness raising sessions at several community venues which included Deeplish Community Centre, Castlemere Community Centre, Castleton Community Centre, BACP, St Andrews Church & KYP Apna Ghar.

The Chairman of PKCA, Mudassir Yasin, explained: “PKCA's main objectives of the campaign was not only to raise awareness of recycling but also, and importanty to promote friendship, goodwill, understanding, partnership and interaction between communities living or working in Rochdale.”

During the sessions, PKCA staff and Rochdale Council's Environmental Management team delivered talks on recycling and highlighted the main issues which cause problems for efficient recycling, for example, people leaving fluids in cans and plastic bottles that leak into the vehicle and then onto roads and streets causing environmental issues including pollution and odours.

PKCA talked about individuals that put dog fouling in normal bins, overloading food caddies, not emptying drinks bottles and cans properly and other issues that Rochdale Council Environmental Management team raised.

PKCA discussed these issues with residents, ward councillors, faith leaders, community centres and community activists.

Councillor Aasim Rashid said: “I am delighted that PKCA delivered these fantastic and much needed awareness sessions across Rochdale; I am confident that the impact will be far-reaching and we will see an improvement in the recycling rates across the borough.”

Councillor Allen Brett (Deputy Leader) added: “I attended some of the sessions and found that the information shared by PKCA and the Rochdale Council team was very informative and the feedback from the community was also very positive.”
