Streets lined for the funeral of ‘Whitworth superhero’ Josh McCormack

Date published: 23 January 2017

People lined the streets for the funeral of ‘Whitworth’s superhero’ five-year-old Joshua McCormack (Monday 23 January), who died on 13 January after battling a terminal brain tumour.

Blue ribbons and balloons, Josh’s favourite colour, lined the route the funeral cortège took, gracing every surface from lampposts and door handles to railings and trees.

The cortége paused for a few moments at the Crown Oil Arena before continuing through Shawclough and Tonacliffe to St John’s in Whitworth. Josh was made an honorary member of Rochdale AFC in November last year as the team’s youngest ever signing. His squad number 55 has since been retired.

The cortège was led by Joshua’s ‘guard of honour’, Darth Vader, and several Stormtroopers, for the remainder of the journey between Berni Inn and the church. Many of those who lined the streets of Whitworth applauded Josh’s brave battle with cancer and walked behind the procession to St John’s for the service.

Following the service, a private burial took place at Whitworth Cemetery before the people gathered at Berni Inn to reflect on their memories of Josh. A balloon release took place at the Halfway House.

Tracey Tuksa said: “My daughter and I have paid our respects, we stood near Horse Carrs, blew our kisses to Josh and showed our hearts for Nicola and Kevin, if only we could do more. Forever in our thoughts.”

Sarah Potter commented: “There's not a single word me or anyone could say that would make today any easier for you. The whole of Whitworth and possibly everyone else are all here to show their support and respect for you, Joshua, Nicola and Kevin. You are all so strong.”

Bethany Fletcher said: “I, for one, am proud to say I live here today seeing everyone come together for this little man taken far too soon. R.I.P Josh. Fly high.”

Emma Coulding added: “Josh, you are a true super hero to everyone near and far and you have shown every single person what heroic strength actually looks like.”
