Police warning after victim loses £750 in Amazon email scam
Greater Manchester Police has issued a warning about fake Amazon emails in circulation that have scammed a victim of £750.
The suspicious emails claim to be from Amazon, informing recipients that they have recently placed an order online.
The scam then offers the chance of a full refund if the user has not authorised the transaction. To receive this refund, victims must follow a link to a ‘help centre’ before entering their name, address, and bank details.
One unnamed victim was reported to have lost £750 after receiving one of these scam emails from ‘service@amazon.co.uk’.
Police say: “One victim reported entering his Nationwide banking details and later found out £750 had been stolen from his account.
“After the victim notified Nationwide they cancelled the card and refunded the money in full.”
Items featuring in the scam emails reportedly include a vintage chandelier, luxury watches, and expensive electrical products.
Amazon say they will never ask for personal information to be supplied by email, and that while the emails and connected websites may look authentic they are not Amazon.co.uk.
They say the emails also often contain attachments or prompts to install software onto your computer, and the suspicious emails often include typos and grammatical errors.
