Are you happy being secretly tracked around stores via your mobile phone?

Date published: 30 December 2016

Stores are secretly tracking shoppers movements using signals from mobile phone wi-fi.

A number of stores now contain receiver boxes which are continuously gathering data feeding back location information and monitoring the movement of shoppers.

Privacy campaigners say that customers are often unaware that they are being ‘watched’ through their mobile phone.

Renata Samson, the Chief Executive of Big Brother Watch, said: “Not only is it an invasion of privacy but it’s a security risk. Nobody knows how safe these networks are, and who is to say that the wi-fi network you join is legitimate.”

If you don’t want to be watched and tracked you can opt out via:

You will need to enter the 'mac address' of your phone - usually found in settings. Once submitted, your phone will no longer be tracked.
