Local people asked to pay more for policing

Date published: 21 December 2016

Local residents are set to be forced to pay more for policing.

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd is proposing a council tax increase after the police grant settlement confirmed that Greater Manchester Police’s government grant will be cut by £5.7m next year.

The proposal would see the police element of the average council tax bill rise from £157.30 to £162.30.

Mr Lloyd said: “Without this increase we will have to cut more from front line policing, so I ask to public to support me in this proposal and help keep our communities safe.

“I know that this is not an ideal time to begin the consultation but of course the timing of the government’s announcement guarantees that the consultation has to take place now.”

The consultation closes on Friday 20 January.
