Whitworth High School hope to cook up second win

Date published: 13 December 2016

Whitworth Community High School is hoping to retain the title of Youth Enterprise Champions as it aims to raise the most money for Rossendale Hospice.

Whitworth Community High School is one of the smaller secondary schools in Rossendale, but it succeeded in scooping the honours last year against much larger schools.

It was the first time the competition had been held and the team from Whitworth raised £1,857.

This year six high schools are taking part, Whitworth Community High, All Saints, Haslingden High, Alder Grange, Tor View and Fearns Community Sports College and each has three months to raise the most.

Businesses mentor each group of students and donate £50 to kick-start the campaigns.

Rob Hallam, owner of Big Tank Productions, is mentoring the Whitworth team.

Jack Myatt, 14, said: “We have held two bake sales so far and we also incorporated one into a bake off between staff who made cakes, which were then judged.”

Headteacher Gill Middlemas, Head of Key Stage 4 Simon Rushton, along with Jack, taste tested the entries and judged them on appearance, taste and technical demands, and the winning cake was made by cover supervisor teacher Amanda Pickering.

Jack said: “Mrs Pickering created a technical cake with an orange flavour and it was in a very complex Battenberg-style.”

The sales were well supported by staff and students and a number of cakes were also donated by Costco.

Katie Bray, 14, said: “We have lots of ideas and we have until the second week in January to raise the money.”

There are nine students in the group and they meet at least once a week to assess how much has been raised and plan further events.

Jack said: “It has been good to be involved as it is a challenge and we want to make sure the whole school takes part in the fundraising activities.”

The team also asked for donations from the audiences who attended the school production of Fame.
