Shoeboxes full of presents have been donated to help the homeless this Christmas

Date published: 12 December 2016

Local people turned up to Balderstone Library with the gifts containing essential items such as toiletries, food and warm clothing following a festive appeal by senior librarian Justine Bull.

Justine said: "I heard about the shoebox appeal where you fill a shoe box full of things homeless people need most, and I asked local residents to help.

"I was amazed with the response. People were coming in all day every day with boxes, all nicely gift wrapped. It was amazing. I can't thank people enough.

"There are even parcels for their dogs, including treats, doggie fleeces and new collars."

Local Councillor Richard Farnell said: "The season of goodwill is alive and kicking in Rochdale. People are so generous. This is what Christmas is all about. Thinking of people who are in need.

"Being homeless at any time of the year is awful, but it must be even worse at Christmas. These gifts, packed with really useful things homeless people need - such as toothpaste, tinned food and warm socks - will probably be the only gifts they receive.

"Justine is a super librarian who does a really great job. The library is a hub of activity and is well supported by local folk. There is certainly more than just books down at Balderstone Library."

The gifts will be collected and distributed to local homeless people by the Greater Manchester Homeless Shoebox Appeal.

• Balderstone Library is also throwing open its doors on Christmas Day from 11.30am to 2pm for a late Christmas breakfast and festive treats for anyone who will be on their own over the holidays, served up by Justine and the local ward councillors.
