Faith in Modern Britain Conference at Spotland Stadium

Date published: 25 November 2016

The Faith in Modern Britain Conference encouraged the people of Greater Manchester to work together to overcome extremism through community cohesion.

Over 70 people of different faiths and none came together at Spotland Stadium to discuss the role of faith in Modern Britain and the importance of living with difference.

The conference offered a variety of workshops that looked at how places of worship can be of service to the wider society, how we challenge extremism by building stronger dialogue and communication, and how faith communities can make better use of technology to promote collaboration and peace.

The Inter Faith Network for the UK leads on Inter Faith Week nationally and its co-chairman, Bishop Richard Atkinson and Jatinder Singh Birdi have said: “The 500+ events that have taken part around the UK have sent a powerful signal about people of different faiths and beliefs working together for the good of our shared society and about the importance of positive inter faith relations.

"The Week has also highlighted the enormous contribution that those of all faith and belief communities make – in most cases through volunteering – to their local communities.”

Keynote speaker Suzanne Kochanowski, Head of Race Equality and Faith Engagement for the Department for Communities and Local Government, affirmed the commitment by her department to address the issues we face in society. She emphasised that conferences such as this are vital in the current context and political climate.
