Carer aid vows: I'll be your champion

Lucy Garrard is championing for carers' rights

A dedicated nursing assistant is championing for carers ahead of Carers' Rights Day on Friday.

The dedicated day of action is focused on informing carers about their rights and how to access the help and support they are entitled to.

Mental health nursing assistant Lucy Garrard was appointed by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust to take on the additional role of carer champion.

Lucy works on the Southside Ward at The Royal Oldham Hospital to ensure that those looking after relatives and friends are receiving the right support and advice.

Pennine Care has appointed several champions as part of its membership with Triangle of Care, a national initiative committed to involving carers in decisions affecting their loved ones.

Lucy, who attends a mental health carers group as part of her role, said: "My support for the group came at a time when they were feeling negative about mental health services, and they have since told me that my input has made a difference to them.

"I've had personal experience of a close family member in mental health services, so I understood how challenging it can be for carers to get the right advice and information about their loved one's condition.

"I'm pleased to say our work around the Triangle of Care has improved that."

The nursing assistant listens to the views and opinions of carers and updates them with relevant information as well as maintaining boards and packs on her ward.

She said: "Although a lot has been achieved so far, there's even more I'd like to see.

"I feel strongly about services embracing carers' views and making sure they are respected and listened to - and it's great that I can contribute towards this."
