Research on Rochdale Kashmiri

Date published: 23 November 2016

Kashmiris from different walks of life participated in a celebratory event at the Kashmir Youth Project (KYP) as part of a collaboration between Rochdale Borough Council and the University of Manchester.

The research team led by Dr Kalra and Dr Martin Hyde organised this special event as part of a social science research festival sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council of Britain.

While opening the event, Mayor of Rochdale, Ray Dutton, said Rochdale Borough Council is determined to serve all of its communities as its commitment to equality and diversity.

The research team, including research assistant Shams Rehman, shared the initial findings of the research and household survey highlighting the needs and issues facing Kashmiri community in Rochdale, while Farah Bi, a young Kashmiri from London, spoke about her journey of discovering her Kashmiri identity in Britain.

A detailed report of the findings and recommendations will be presented early next year to the council and university.

Participants included local councillors Mohammed Zaman and Shakil Ahmed along with many community members.
