Review of legislation to protect rape victims

Date published: 18 November 2016

The government’s plans to review legislation in the wake of the Ched Evans case has been welcomed by Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner.

Home Office minister Baroness Williams of Trafford has said the government will look at how the law to protect rape victims from having to reveal their sexual history is working in practice.

Tony Lloyd said: “There has clearly been a lot of disquiet as to why a woman’s previous sexual history was relevant in a case like this.

“The government has got to examine whether this case opens the floodgates for the criminal justice system to return to the days when the automatic defence was to target the victim, an approach which was fundamentally flawed and undermined victims’ confidence.

“I thought we were past that and ministers have got to make sure we do not take a step backwards.”
