Rochdale Connections Trust looking for volunteers prepared to work with young people

Date published: 17 November 2016

Rochdale Connections Trust is looking for volunteers prepared to work with on its young person’s mentoring scheme, which for many years has supported and encouraged young people to grow and survive and lead successful lives.

Recently, M6 theatre and RCT entered into a new partnership to bring a new depth to mentoring and service provisions and have embarked on a four-year Big Lottery supported project called ‘Rochdale cares to act’,

Rochdale Connections Trust is looking to recruit and train their second cohort of mentors to compliment the twelve just trained.

RCT is looking for suitably motivated volunteers who are prepared to work with young people aged between 11 to 16 by the provision of a couple of hours per week when they can provide support and guidance to young people. Mentors will be considered from the age of 21 upwards to 70.

A spokesperson said: "We hope to recruit from across the spectrum of people, male and female and from the many diverse communities that live in or near Rochdale.

"Mentors do not need special skills, but will require the ability to listen in a non-judgmental way, to be able to encourage conversation and help the young person to achieve some form of stability and understanding about themselves.

"When a young person is frustrated or angry or feels misunderstood, a mentor might be the first person for a long time that accepts the young person for what they are and is prepared to listen, the key being able to listen.

"Can you:

  • Give two hours a week (times are very flexible)?
  • Give a couple of one off days (maybe evenings) to receive training?
  • Give ideally six months towards the project and work with one or may be two mentees, though not at the same time?

"By being a mentor you become so much more, you join an organisation with a long established reputation for community programs, working with young persons and families.

"You will have opportunities to assist with RCT weekly drop in sessions and other activities should you wish."
