Rochdale Rotary Club is 90 years old

President John Holder and over 60 Rotarians and guests attended the 90th Charter Night dinner on the 3 November at the Masonic buildings on Richard Street.

President John Holder said: “It was a chance meeting with a Rotary member at a fundraising event at a local supermarket which spurred me on to join the club just six years ago.

“There has been great camaraderie and support of members for all our projects.

“Close to my heart are the regular cricket fundraising events to provide coaching of young amateur cricketers in the borough. We all work well together and this has helped to achieve all our objectives.”

To celebrate the event a special cake was made by Heather Williams and each attender was given a miniature specially inscribed cricket bat.

To round off the evening all heard a presentation from Stephen Drew, founder of the Charity MedicMalawi.

The club has supported this charity for some years and friends of the club have visited and helped out in the charities’ supported orphanage. Funding from the club has also helped continue the development of their hospital.

Many cataract extractions are done to transform people, who can now lead a fully independent life.

Water irrigation of a farming area is another example of the MedicMalawi’s ongoing support of the local community.

Rotary District 1285 President Stan Bowes from Saddleworth congratulated the club on its success as one of the larger and more active clubs in the area. New member Merrilyn Chadwick read from the original Charter document from 1926 signed by the then Rotary International President and Secretary.

Congratulations were also given by Doug Sutton Vice President of Rochdale East. His club was founded in 1970 after much hard work put in by Rochdale Rotary club members.

A cheque for £1,000 was given by President John to Stephen for the Charity MedicMalawi. This ended a very successful 90th Charter night.
