Kirkholt's chippy is on the move to make way for a new shopping centre to be built

Date published: 12 November 2016

Ken Pashi, who has been serving up the Kirkholt's fish and chips for 20 years, closed his doors on The Strand this week to make way for a new shopping centre.

The good news for fish and chip lovers is that he's relocating to temporary premises further up the parade until his new shop is built.

Ken served up his last portion of chips to local councillor and council leader Richard Farnell before the bulldozers move in.

Ken said: "It's a sad day really. We've been keeping Kirkholt well fed for decades and have some very happy memories here.

"Nothing stands still. In about eighteen months we will have a brand new shop to match all the other improvements taking place on Kirkholt.

"I will be closed for about a week as we move the chip range to the temporary shop at the other end of the Strand. It's a bit of a headache but it will be worth it in the long run."

Ken's chippy is the last shop to relocate to make way for a new shopping parade and new community centre being built by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Rochdale Borough Council.

Councillor Farnell said: "Ken's fish, chips and mushy peas are a legend. It's the best chippy for miles. The good news is he'll still be serving up his famous fish suppers while all the construction work is taking place.

"The temporary move will allow a new £7M community hub to be built which will be a fantastic facility for the estate. It will house community and training rooms, housing staff, welfare advice an a police post.

"There will also be a community cafe and youth centre as well as eight bright new shops with flats above. I can't wait for building work to get started.

"The developments taking place right across Kirkholt at the moment are breathtaking. Millions are being invested in new homes to rent and buy; a new skate park, improvements to the park; and new computers and community room at the library."

Ken added: "One thing that won't change is our tasty fish and chips. We've been feeding Kirkholt families for generations and will be serving future generations for years to come in our bright new shop."

Demolition of the old shopping parade will take place over the next few months with construction of the new building to start in the Spring.
