Hundreds enjoy bonfire and fireworks on Cronkeyshaw Common

Families, children and groups gathered in their masses at the annual bonfire and firework show on Cronkeyshaw Common on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of people gathered on the Common to enjoy the council-organised bonfire, which was lit at 7pm.

For many of the spectators, this was their first bonfire, attracting those from outside the borough.

Hannah Cooke and Michelle Taylor travelled from Stalybridge and Bolton so that children Sophie, 4, and Libby, 6, could see the spectacular show for the first time.

Steve Partington, from Whitworth, brought his grandchildren Macey, 4, Megan, 6, and McKenzie, 7, to see the display.

Megan said her favourite part of the night was the sparklers, whilst McKenzie said he liked the fire. Macey was undecided, proclaiming: “I loved the whole day.”

Steve said: “I’ve brought them for a kids night out- they’re all excited to see the fireworks as it’s their first time at Cronkeyshaw bonfire.”

Stan Ashton, 6, and his mum Jane travelled from Littleborough to see the bonfire.

Jane said: “Stan’s very excited; it’s his first time at the bonfire. I think his favourite part is the fireworks - especially the really loud ones.”

Emma Blair and her family also attended the bonfire for the first time, despite living in Rochdale.

Her daughter Olivia, who turned 9 two days ago, said: “It’s fantastic; my favourite parts were the toys and the fireworks were superb - especially the green ones.”
