GMP co-ordinating operational activity for Olympic and Paralympic parade

Date published: 14 October 2016

The eyes of the world will be on Manchester for the parade on Monday 17 October 2016, to celebrate the successes of the Olympians and Paralympians in the Rio Olympics 2016.

Police have plans in place and a dedicated team co-ordinating operational activity in the run up to and during the parade.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police will be patrolling the city centre and working closely with the parade organisers and transport providers and other partners to ensure all of those taking part and who come to watch the parade, can do so in a safe environment.

Superintendent Martin Greenhalgh of Greater Manchester Police said: “We are very proud to be part of this world-class sporting event and it provides a wonderful opportunity for thousands of visitors to sample the cosmopolitan culture of Greater Manchester.

“There will be a high-profile policing presence across the city in the run up to and throughout the parade.

“We are extremely skilled and have vast experience in running major events, including sporting events and are confident that visitors, athletes and residents can enjoy a safe and friendly parade in Manchester.

“We are also working closely with other organisations including, Transport for Greater Manchester and Manchester City Council, as well as many other transport providers, to ensure that the parade is a success.

“There is likely to be some disruption caused to travel in and around the city centre over the course of the day and I would ask the public for their patience and support as the parade takes place and to allow additional time for travel as required.”
