Fancy dress shop issues warning over clown outfits

Date published: 11 October 2016

Rochdale Fancy Dress Shop, based on Drake Street has been forced to take extra precautions after more reports of clowns causing fear and upset across Rochdale and throughout the country.

The ‘creepy clown’ craze has caused havoc across Rochdale - with schools and parents speaking of some terrifying incidents.

The craze started in America and has led to dozens of copycat incidents over here. Police have warned anybody who gets involved that they may be committing a public order offence.

Now, The Fancy Dress Shop, based on Drake Street is demanding photo ID for anybody wishing to hire or purchase clown costumes.

They have been forced to issue a public notice and have reserved the right to refuse customers they suspect may be wishing to frighten people.

Andy Kelly, from the shop, said: "Due to a recent spate of incidents across the country, we at the Fancy Dress Shop have decided to take a policy change.

“Whilst we recognise everyone's right to a free choice we will only be selling and hiring clown costumes to people who can produce photo ID. Should there be any reports of incidents in the area then the information will be used accordingly.

“We have sold many clown outfits over the years without issue and hope the Halloween season can be enjoyed by all. We hope you understand."
