Samaritans’ ‘Local Action Saves Lives’ campaign

Date published: 07 October 2016

‘Celebrating World Mental Health Day’ is a free event organised by the Rochdale and District MIND that aims to raise awareness and remove the stigma associated with mental health.

There will also be a range of fun and engaging activities aimed at both children and adults to take part in.

Representatives from a local mental health pilot project, which sees Greater Manchester Police and the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust working together, will also be at the event with a ‘mental wellbeing ’display.

Visitors will be able to speak to those involved with the pilot project, which is currently underway at the Rochdale Police Station, to find out further information on initiatives that offer support to those with mental health needs who regularly come in to contact with the police.

Specialist mental health practitioner, Louise Shaw, represents the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust on the project. Louise said: “It’s really important to get people talking about mental health to try and break down some of the stigma attached to it and make sure people know about the support available.

“The ‘Celebrating World Mental Health Day’ event is a fantastic opportunity to listen to and engage with members of the public, while raising awareness of positive mental wellbeing.”

Working alongside Louise Shaw on the project is the police co-ordinator PC Michael Clarke. Commenting on the event, Michael said: “I’m privileged to have the opportunity to work with our partners in celebrating World Mental Health Day.

“Raising awareness and reducing the stigma that surrounds mental health is critical to help reduce crisis and provide support that meet the needs of the community, particularly those who may be vulnerable.”

‘Celebrating World Mental Health Day’ is a free event is taking place on Saturday, 8 October, from 10am to 3pm at the Rochdale Market, Smith Street, the event will see a number of organisations and community groups in attendance to give advice and support surrounding mental health issues.
