Revive Castleton Carnival, says Claire Dring

Date published: 04 October 2016

Claire Dring is seeking to raise £1,500 pounds to raise revive Castleton Carnival.

Claire, owner of Forget Me Not, attended the carnival for many years with her parents and her sister and children.

She began thinking about reviving the carnival the year after it was cancelled. Her son, who was three at the time, had asked: “Can we go to the carnival?”

Claire said: “Castleton is slowly becoming a community once again with residents being brought together. We recently held a Maypole dance on the village green.

“We have fantastic links to Manchester with the direct bus and train routes, plus the canal."

She added: “I’m determined to see it happen. So many local people and shops are interested in idea.”

The project will only be funded if the money is raised by 3 November 2016.

If given the green light, the Carnival will take place in July 2017 from Slattocks Farm in Hopwood to Mayfield Rugby Club.

Claire said: “Any money raised at the carnival will go into the community; we’ve been thinking about more lighting, flower planters for the main roads.

“Councillors Billy Sheerin and Jean Hornby have worked hard to make Castleton more appealing. They have had the railway station upgraded, overturned parking restrictions and helped with the restoration of the Old Carnegie building.”

If approval for the Carnival is not given, but the minimum funds have been raised, the money will be given back to the Castleton community.
