Balderstone and Kirkholt residents get their hands on Hornets' latest silverware

Residents got their hands on some very special sporting silverware at recent the Balderstone and Kirkholt Forum - the community meeting was the first in the town see the latest addition to Rochdale Hornets' trophy cabinet, The Championship Cup.

Hornets pulled off a spectacular victory in France to beat red-hot favourites Toulouse 24-22 to win the League One Promotion Final against Toulouse Olympique at Stade Ernest-Argelés in Blagnac, France and gain promotion to the Championship Division One next season.

Rugby fan and local councillor, Richard Farnell said: "It was a rare treat to get our hands on the trophy. We are all proud of the success of Hornets. It's a great local club and wish them every success for the new season in a much tougher division."

Councillor Farnell has pledged to hold a civil reception for the champions at the Town Hall.

Mark Wynn, Hornets' chairman, said: "We are the people's club - the first in rugby league to become a fan-owned cooperative. We are proud of our local roots and are always happy to visit local communities to share our successes. Hornets are a cracking local team so  turn up to Spotland and watch the lads in action next season."
