The photo was taken in 1914 of the 16th Battalion KRRC (the Church Lad’s Brigade Battalion) prior to marching from Rochdale to Manchester for enlistment in the King’s Royal Rifles.

They attended a service at the Rochdale Parish Church before parading on Town Hall Square and being addressed by Major Ogden, the commanding officer.

The recruits included men from Rochdale, Milnrow, Castleton, Shaw, Littleborough and Ashton-under-Lyne.

The photograph was initially featured in the Rochdale Observer on 26 September 1914.
