Statement from Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, following the conviction of Mohammed Hussain Syeedy

Date published: 16 September 2016

Statement from Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, following the conviction of Mohammed Hussain Syeedy for the murder of religious scholar Jalal Uddin in Rochdale, said: “Jalal Uddin was a well-loved and well-respected member of the community.

"That his life was taken in such a brutal way sent shockwaves through the communities of Rochdale and beyond, bringing together people from all parts of the town in a show of unity and outpouring of grief and support for Mr Uddin’s family.

“This was a crime driven by hatred – pure and simple - a poison that we cannot allow to infect our society. While Syeedy did not strike the fatal blow, he was complicit in the murder and today he has been brought to justice. I hope this brings some comfort to Mr Uddin’s loved ones and local people, who have lost a loyal, caring and popular member of the community.

“Today’s verdict also sends a strong message that the police will do all they can to bring criminals to justice. This was a complex, rigorous but swift investigation, and I have no doubt GMP will continue in this vein as they hunt down Syeedy’s accomplice.”
