Peace Group questions council invitation to "warmonger"

Date published: 16 September 2016

Rochdale and Littleborough Peace Group has sent an email to Rochdale Borough Council cabinet member for culture, health and wellbeing, Councillor Janet Emsley, questioning the decision to invite Tony Blair’s former Director of Communications and Strategy, Alastair Campbell ,to speak at the forthcoming Literature and Ideas Festival.

In the email the group emphasises that Alastair Campbell played a prominent role in promoting the case for the invasion of Iraq and for a war which led to countless unnecessary deaths and made the world a much more dangerous place.

They told Councillor Emsley: "In our view, a warmonger like Alastair Campbell should be at the International Court of Justice in The Hague answering questions about aiding and abetting Tony Blair's case for an unnecessary and illegal war, not at Rochdale's wonderful festival promoting sales of his latest book."
