Fishing in the river in town

Date published: 15 September 2016

The newly opened River Roch has attracted yet more people to its banks - this time in the form of two young men fishing under one of the bridges.

It is not known how the young men, who did not appear to be drunk, came to be in the river or if they possessed fishing licenses.

The emergency services were not required to remove the two men from the river, unlike previous incidents.

Julian Smith, who campaigned for the river opening, said: “Fishing here is a show off activity. As people get used to the novelty, they’ll pass it by.

“No-one questions the availability of drink when a drunk gets into trouble, but questions everything they could misuse.

“A joke or stunt is different to damage, and it doesn’t follow that we shouldn’t try to improve the heritage of the town hall area because of a minority.

“We have a duty to maintain the best of our heritage to bring back respect and pride to the town.”
