Azeem Amir: world’s youngest blind person to complete the Tough Mudder

Date published: 14 September 2016

Azeem Amir became the world’s youngest blind person to complete the Tough Mudder obstacle challenge on Saturday 10 September.

The 17-year-old from Rochdale took on the 12 mile run to raise over £3,900 pounds for the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital where he has received treatment since birth.

He hopes he can reach £4,000 before the donations deadline in a few weeks.

Azeem and his former PE teacher, Sam Dainty, completed the course in just over five hours. Sam had completed the Tough Mudder previously and ran as Azeem’s guide. They ran together linked with a skipping rope.

Azeem said: “The hardest obstacle was the Shawshank. I fell out of this tube backwards into two metres of icy water.

"The training we did definitely helped.

“The support I had from staff and my family on the day was amazing.”

Azeem is taking a break from fundraising in order to focus on college and his budding football career, which he hopes will lead to representing England at the Paralympic Games.

“I don’t have any plans for any other runs just yet, but in the future I want to do something even bigger,” he said.
