Damaged roof at Moorhouse Community Primary School

Moorhouse Community Primary School in Milnrow had Edwardian roof slates damaged and wooden fence posts stolen during the August summer holidays.

Approximately 50 slates were damaged as a result of three children climbing on the roof, believed to be from other schools, with no indication of deliberate damage.

The school has taken further precautions by installing barriers to prevent children from accessing the roof, after identifying the location.

The school also had 50 heavy wooden posts stolen from its outside learning area.

Staff and six volunteers had spent a full day installing the posts to the forest school area, a quiet and secluded area of the school field where pupils can learn about nature.

Headteacher Helen Brougham said: “The safety of young people is the most important issue here. We urge the community to be vigilant and report any young people they might see on the roof so they don’t get hurt.

“We’re disappointed we have to spend money on roof repairs, rather than new equipment for the children, as our budget was already tight.”
