Anger at bins not being emptied after 85-year-old falls

Date published: 07 September 2016

The daughter-in-law of 85-year-old Agnes Nixon, who fell trying to move her unemptied bins, is "furious this has been allowed to happen".

Agnes, of Milnrow, has been receiving assisted collections for nearly four years, however daughter-in-law Joanne Nixon says the bins have only been emptied on a "few occasions" since October 2015.

Joanne said: “The bins were left and are now full of maggots. My mother-in-law tried to move the bins herself and fell at the rear of her house. We don’t know how long she was there as she has Alzheimer’s.

“Luckily, a neighbour found her on the grass, otherwise who knows what would have happened?

“I’m furious this has been allowed to happen.”

Joanne says she contacted Environmental Management at Rochdale Borough Council but received no response.

The bins were emptied following direct contact from Rochdale Online, and assurance was given that Agnes would be visited and placed on a watch list. Joanne says whilst the bins were emptied, she has received no correspondence.

A spokesperson for the Council said: “One of our supervisors spoke to a neighbour on behalf of the resident the day after it was reported.
“The bins were emptied and the resident placed on the watch list to ensure her bins will be emptied in future.”

This is not the first time Agnes has had a problem with her bin being collected, between October 2015 and May 2016, Joanne made over 20 calls for one collection due to a lack of communication from the Council.
