Date published: 15 August 2016

A vehicle left the road and plunged into Booth Wood Reservoir, between Rochdale and Halifax, near the Turnpike Public House, around 8.20pm on Sunday (14 August).

It is believed that the driver was the sole occupant of the red car, which travelling west bound along Oldham Road towards Rishworth before it left the carriageway.

The driver is believed to be a local man in his thirties. His family have been informed.

Officers attended supported by the police helicopter and the fire and ambulance service. A large scale operation to locate the vehicle is continuing with specialist under water search teams searching the water.

Road closures are in place from Junction 22 of the M62 to the turning circle at Rishworth School. It is anticipated the closures will remain in place throughout Monday, with the public being advised to seek alternative routes.

Sergeant Aaron Gudgeon of the Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Support Team West said; "The road remains closed to allow specialist teams to conduct their enquiries and to recover the vehicle and we thank the public for their understanding and cooperation.

"I would appeal to anyone who was travelling in and around Rishworth on Sunday evening and who may have any information about the incident to come forward to police via 101.

"Enquires are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of what took place."

Information can be passed to the Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Support Team West via 101, quoting 1536 of the 14/8.
