The Rochdale Lions Club have made a donation to the Rochdale Blind Welfare Society in memory of long-time member Linda Spencer.
Linda had been a member of the Rochdale Lions Club since its inception in 1990 before she died after complications with an operation in June, aged 76. She was part of the
Rochdale Blind Welfare Society for about 15 years after she became partially sighted and was later confined to a wheelchair.
Eileen Taylor, president of the Rochdale Lions Club, explained why the donation was made: “Linda was a valued member of Rochdale Lions. She did a lot of work improving awareness of diabetes because she had it herself, and she helped with our sight awareness week last October.
“Linda got so much enjoyment out of attending the club because she was meeting other people, there was entertainment and she went on trips, so she could have a nice afternoon out and she really loved it. She will be missed.
“We hope the Rochdale Blind Welfare Society will enjoy spending the money and think of Linda whilst doing so.”
Keith Swift, of the Rochdale Blind Welfare Society, said: “Linda was very well liked and always a very cheerful member of our group. She got on well with everybody.
“We appreciate Rochdale Lions’ donation and will obviously use the money for the benefit of our members. We provide a social meeting place for people who are blind or have impaired vision.”
The Rochdale Lions Club raises money for local community groups and aims to serve people in the local area that require assistance. They meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 8.00pm at the Woolworths Social Club on Gipsy Lane, Rochdale.
Anyone that would like to join the Rochdale Blind Welfare Society can be referred by Trudi Garner, a member of the Rochdale council sensory team and the Rochdale council welfare officer for the blind.
The Rochdale Blind Welfare Society get together on Monday afternoons at 20 High Barn Close, Rochdale.
