Corporal Sam Wilde riding from Berwick to London via Rochdale
Corporal Sam Wilde and members of the fusilier cycling team will be riding through Rochdale and Littleborough next month when they travel the length of the country in a charity bike ride at the end of the month.
Sam, 29, will be riding from Berwick to London to raise money for the Fusiliers Aid Society, and will be joined by fusiliers from several other local infantries across the country.
On the bike ride, Sam said: “We’re doing just short of 400 miles in four days, from 30 August until 2 September.
“Our final route hasn’t been confirmed yet but we should be coming through Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Littleborough, past Hopwood Hall College and then towards Bury via Bury Road on 31 August.
Sam has been raising funds for the Fusiliers Aid Society since last summer when he and his colleagues completed the Rochdale half marathon, but was halted by a serious injury earlier this year, as he explained: “I can’t run at the moment. I was playing football and I completely snapped my Achilles, that was on 19 January.
“I was in a cast for five weeks, a boot for four weeks and after that it’s been physiotherapy. Cycling was part of that, though, so I got a bit of a bug for it and I started cycling to work and pushing myself on the bike.
“I’m also recruiting for the fusiliers so we want to raise the profile of the regiment. My job is as a personal training instructor but I have got a posting for a year, so we just want to talk to people who are interested to see what they’re about because it’s a good thing to get involved in.”
The bike ride will see Sam and his colleagues ride from Berwick to Newcastle, then Richmond to Bury, followed by Bury to Coventry and Coventry to London across the four-day journey.
The Fusiliers Aid Society provides support for both former and current members of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers as well as their families.
