Birch Hill Chapel given new lease of life as homes

Date published: 09 August 2016

The former chapel at Birch Hill Hospital, Littleborough, has been given a new lease of life as a pair of unique four bedroom homes.

Completely transformed the chapel at Birch Hill Gardens now offers modern family living whilst retaining the individual character of the historic building.

The renovation is part of the company’s development of the former Birch Hill Hospital into a range of contemporary houses and apartments.

Andrew Clarke, project manager for Persimmon Homes Lancashire, said: “Projects like this can be a real challenge, but it there is always something very satisfying about the sympathetic re-imagining of old industrial buildings into a much-needed residential scheme.

“Our expert team has been able to balance the demands of modern building requirements with retaining as many historic features as possible, to make the most of the chapel’s layout and create two practical modern homes.”

Each of the chapel houses came complete with a living room, kitchen, downstairs cloakroom, utility room, family bathroom and an en suite to the master bedroom.

Mr Clarke added: “We are currently converting the main building into a selection of fantastic apartments. As with the chapel, we are retaining the architectural elements within the old building, but ensuring the homes are built to modern specifications.”

Built as a workhouse in the 1870s, the hospital closed in 2013. The site’s historic clock tower will be preserved and form a centrepiece of the new development.

The Birch Hill Gardens development includes a range of new build properties in addition to the homes being created within the existing buildings.
