Liz McInnes backs EU nationals' right to remain

Date published: 07 July 2016

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, has given her support to EU nationals currently working and living in the UK.

Yesterday (Wednesday 6 July) a motion proposed by Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham MP which called on the government to commit to giving EU nationals already here in the UK the right to remain was passed in parliament by 245 votes to two.

Speaking after the vote, Liz McInnes said: "I am delighted that this motion was passed.

"Since the vote to leave the EU there has been a reported rise in race-hate crimes and abuse of migrants, and that is completely unacceptable.

"I have had several emails from constituents, including British-born people who have friendships or relationships with EU nationals, who are genuinely fearful about what the future holds for themselves and their loved ones.

"The vast majority of EU nationals living here in the UK are working and paying taxes, just like the 1.2 million Brits doing the same across the EU on the continent.

"I believe it is absolutely vital that the government and all those in positions of influence make it crystal clear that migrants who are currently here are safe and are welcome."
