Sparth language classes continue thanks to National Grid donation

Date published: 07 July 2016

Sparth Community Centre has received a donation of £3,150 from National Grid’s Bringing Energy to Life fund, enabling the continuation of a successful pilot scheme to teach English to Pakistani women.

The class, which has been running since 2014, has been under threat of closure due to a lack of funding.

Jamilla Waheed, English Tutor at Sparth Community Centre, said: “The sponsorship has secured our lessons for a year and we can continue to improve vital communication skills in a fun interactive weekly lesson.

“We’re really delighted that National Grid has decided to support these important classes, fundamental to the local community.”

Samantha Rendell, Land Regeneration Manager at National Grid, said: “We’re delighted to support Sparth Community Centre in providing this fantastic community resource. The donation is one of the first of its kind from National Grid’s Bringing Energy To Life fund (BETL), which works to benefit community organisations and charities in areas where National Grid works.

“As our neighbour, we wish Sparth Community Centre and the students all the best in their classes and look forward to hearing how well they do.”

The donation follows National Grid’s recent dismantling project at the former gasworks off Fern Street, which continues and is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2016.
