Police investigating a “deliberate and targeted attack”

Police are investigating a “deliberate and targeted attack” that has left a young man and woman in hospital with serious injuries.

Officers arrived on the scene on Oldham Road at 12.36am to reports that a blue Citroen C4 had been seen driving into a white Ford Transit van before the van smashed at speed into a wall.

A 26-year-old man and 21-year-old woman who were travelling in the van at the time suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

The woman sustained a broken leg and wrist as well as swelling to the face. The man remains in a serious but stable condition.

The initial collision is believed to have been a deliberate and targeted attack.

Detective Inspector Andy Aston of GMP’s Rochdale borough said: “This is a shocking attack which will no doubt cause a lot of concern locally but I would like to assure everybody that we have launched a full investigation.

“We believe the initial collision was a targeted attack with the Citroen deliberately driving into the Transit van before it collided with the wall.

“If anybody has any information that they believe might assist with our investigation then please contact police directly or come via Crimes.”
