Maths Happiness month at Hamer Primary School

Date published: 30 June 2016

The project was launched by Mrs Terry during an assembly on Monday 20 June, where children were asked to consider what makes them happy.

Children then followed this up with more class based work in the afternoon. As well as discussing what makes them happy, they discussed the role that money plays in this – asking the question, ‘Does money buy you happiness?’

There was a follow up assembly the next day, with children being asked to share findings from their class discussions and then the enterprise element of the project was introduced.

Each class was given a £10:00 smile budget to invest in goods or services to be sold at the Happiness Fair on the afternoon of Friday the 1 July.

The aim of the fair is to spread a little happiness throughout the school community, with the proceeds for each class being re-invested in order to spread more happiness across the wider community over the coming weeks.

Throughout the project, there have been many links to other curriculum areas.

As well as financial planning and administration, data handling and problem solving, children have been asked to consider things such as:

• Wants and needs
• Scientific evidence about what makes us happy, including how we interact with the world around us and how we feel about ourselves
• Practical ideas to make ourselves/others happier
• An appreciation of what others do to make us happy
• Links to Eid and the concept of charitable giving

The Happiness Fair will be open to children from Reception to Year 6 and there will be stalls selling a variety of products that the children have made themselves. Stalls will include those selling:

  • Good deed vouchers
  • Punch balloons
  • Buns & cakes
  • Maths board games
  • Badges
  • Face painting
  • Pick and mix sweets
  • Chocolate truffles
  • Cupcakes and rocky roads
  • Marble bags and games
  • Cakes, biscuits and marshmallow toppers
  • Raffle
  • Lucky dip
  • Little bags of happiness
  • There will also be a magic/talent/joke show

This project is designed to promote cross curricular, real life application of maths skills, whilst fostering many of the values contained within the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE), British Values and Citizenship programmes of study.
