Blazing saddles cycle group endure 1,300 mile cycle ride for charity

Date published: 20 June 2016

A group of 10 local cyclists have completed an epic 1,300 mile trek to raise thousands of pounds for five charities.

A whopping £30,000 has been raised by cycle group Blazing Saddles, who took on the gruelling journey from Slovenia to Oldham in just 11 consecutive days.

With 12 hour days needed to complete the task in time, there was no time for sightseeing, as the group covered seven countries and climbed over 100,000ft.

Blazing Saddles have embarked on two previous similar events which have raised a substantial amount of money for various charities:

The charities benefiting from the latest generous project are:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support
  • The Fire Fighters Charity
  • S.A.N.D.S
  • J.D.R.F – The type one diabetes charity
  • Manchester Eye Hospital

Organiser Lee Cropper, a Rochdale man who works as a firefighter in Oldham, said: “It was a real challenge this time, with just 11 days to cover 1,300 miles it averaged at 100 to 120 miles a day – there was one day when we hit 150.

“It’s all for a good cause and even though we had the initial target of £40,000, we are happy with what we’ve raised.”

He added: "We lost our daughter to still birth so have been raising money for S.A.N.D.S.”
