Schoolchildren celebrate Queen’s 90th with shopping centre art project

Date published: 11 June 2016

More than 100 schoolchildren teamed up with a local shopping centre to help create a special gift for the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Children of all ages at Broadfield Community Primary School and Spotland Primary School recently took part in a colouring competition, organised by Rochdale Exchange shopping centre, to make a ‘Queen of Rochdale’ photo album, which has been sent to Buckingham Palace to mark Her Majesty’s official birthday.

Rochdale Exchange shopping centre manager, Lorenzo O’Reilly said: “We wanted to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in a truly unique way and we felt involving the community in an art project was a fantastic way to do so.” he said.

Children from both schools chose who they wanted to be the ‘Queen of Rochdale’ and made a drawing to be included in the photo album. They were then entered into a prize draw to be in with a chance to win £100 to spend at Rochdale Exchange.

“The pupils have done a great job with their entries for the competition and we are thrilled that the finished photo album has been sent to the Queen in time for her official birthday celebrations. We hope the children enjoyed taking part in our ‘Queen of Rochdale’ project.” Lorenzo added.

Gemma Holt, deputy head at Broadfield Community Primary School said: “Lots of the children said their Queen of Rochdale would be their mum. They had already learned about the Queen's special birthday and were very excited to take part in a competition where they could design their own Queen.”

Spotland Primary School deputy head, Ailsa Metcalfe said: “The ‘Queen’s 90th birthday is a very special event and one that we, at Spotland Primary, were thrilled to help celebrate and take part in. The children have really enjoyed designing and colouring their entries for the competition.”
