Uniformed public services students got a glimpse of life in the fire service last week.

The Hopwood Hall College students visited Rochdale Community Fire Station to learn more about what makes a good firefighter.

Students were selected from the College and interviewed by the Fire Service for the opportunity of a bespoke three day work experience package where they met the firefighters and got hands-on experience with the fire service equipment and operational procedures.

As part of the visit, students took part in the early morning parade, with each student being allocated a riding position on the ‘Pumps’, before shadowing the operation fire-fighter during morning equipment checks.

The checks were followed by a PE session, emphasising the importance of physical fitness within the services.

The students then took part in drill sessions which included a simulation of a road traffic collision rescue and saw them practicing basic water drills, along with learning about pumping skills and hose management.

Students commented on how much they had enjoyed the day and wanted to know when they could return.

Firefighter Matthew Walklett was equally complimentary of the students, commenting: “The students had a real hands-on experience of what it takes to become a firefighter and, in particular, embraced the opportunity to assist Green Watch with a road traffic collision demonstration.

“All the team at Rochdale Community Fire station were complimentary of the students and would be happy to work with them again in the future.”
