Primary Tag Rugby Competition

Over the past two years we have been very lucky to be a part of the England ‘All schools’ rugby programme. Being a part of this programme has given us many opportunities to participate in some fantastic events. Some of our pupils have had the opportunity to design a band new Rugby kit for the school, which was paid for by the England programme, staff have been able to go on training courses to enhance their knowledge and teaching skills in rugby, and a huge bonus was meeting Prince Harry. Our pupils have competed in many tournaments, one of which gave them the opportunity to be coached by former England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster and players from the world cup squad.

More importantly, through the link of the All Schools programme, we have be able to implement Tag Rugby in this year’s Sports Leader’s programme. Our year 10 leaders have had the privilege to be trained up by one of England’s rugby coaches Aaron Howarth, and were taught how to lead tag rugby in our feeder primary schools. The programme was ran over a course of six weeks, resulting in the finale which was an intense competition held here at St. Cuthbert’s. Sports Leaders from St. Cuthbert’s organised, hosted and refereed the event which was a huge responsibility, but they thoroughly enjoyed rising to the challenge.

Holy Family were victorious, with St. John’s finishing a close 2nd. The end result came down to goal difference so it was a very close competition Some students were ‘scouted’ for various Rugby clubs in Rochdale and we were very honoured to have our guests from England Rugby who brought the Under 20s World Cup with them.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the all schools programme and can’t wait to continue working alongside them and our partnership primary schools next year.

Mamma Mia...what a night!

40 Expressive Arts students were accompanied by staff to the Palace Theatre in Manchester for a performance of the Abba musical 'Mamma Mia'. By the end of the show both pupils and staff were dancing in the aisles. The pupils absolutely loved the 'feel good' factor of the show. This has whet their appetite for the impending announcement of the auditions for the next show...title to be announced

PE News

The Year 7 and 8 Rounders squads competed in the Greater Manchester Schools’ Catholic Cup competitions this week. Both teams finished in 2nd place with some awesome batting and fielding on display. The girls were a real credit to themselves and the school. The Year 8s were pipped to the post in the final by Cardinal Newman in a closely fought game and the Year 7 team were narrowly defeated by a very capable St Bede's performance.

Charlotte’s Angels

For the past few weeks, friends of our beloved Charlotte, who tragically passed away in February, have been selling ‘Charlotte’s Angels’. This was a stunning idea which was created by our Year 10 students. The angels are small silver angel charms which have been threaded onto purple ribbon (Charlotte’s favourite colour). Our students have been attaching them to lapels, zips, key rings and also on their school bags. Up to now, students have raised a very impressive £450 and there is still more to come! All proceeds will be given to Charlotte’s family.

Mr Sunderland’s 10K

Congratulations to our very own science teacher Mr Sunderland who ran the Manchester 10K last weekend. Mr Sunderland has been collecting sponsorship for Springhill hospice, who we support regularly with our charitable efforts. So far he has raised just over £250! Well done Sir!

Transition

Has your child been offered a place at St. Cuthbert’s? Are they nervous at the prospect of starting secondary school? If so, please contact school who will be more than happy to help support you and your family during the transition process.

To support students who are coming to us from a Primary School with few or no peers, we are offering a ‘Friendship Morning’. This will enable students to make relationships with other students who may be nervous at the prospect of starting secondary school. Details will be sent to parents of these student but please contact the school if you have any queries.

Finally, we will have our borough-wide Transition Day on Tuesday 28 June. Students will follow a school timetable and will explore what it is like to be a student at St. Cuthbert’s. If you require any further information, please contact the school.
