Royal fun for Rainbows

Date published: 23 May 2016

Rainbows from across Rochdale celebrated the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II with a ‘Right Royal Rainbow Day’ packed with crafts and activities.

The Queen is the Patron of Girlguiding and to mark this special occasion girls from Rochdale, Heywood, Milnrow and Littleborough, and their leaders, joined over 300 Rainbows from across Lancashire South East at the Drill Hall in Bury on 21 May to celebrate the Queen’s birthday in style.

The Drill Hall was dubbed the ‘Palace’ for the event, and throughout the day, the Rainbows - aged five to seven – went about their ‘royal duties’ taking part in a variety of activities and crafts such as dancing, croquet and lawn games, horse racing, jewellery making, crown decorating and seed planting.

The day ended with a spectacular Royal Ball and the presentation of a very special badge.

Lily Cooke, aged seven, from 2nd Heywood Rainbows said: "It’s been a super day. Making the marshmallow tea cups was my favourite."

Amelia Clark, aged five, from 32nd Rochdale Rainbows said: “I enjoyed the dancing best.”

Katy Jones, aged seven, from 21st Rochdale Rainbows said: “I enjoyed making crowns.”

Event Organiser, Michelle Wood said: “What an amazing day. Seeing so many girls, leaders and volunteers coming together having so much fun in one room has been brilliant.”

Volunteer Leader, Krys Newell from 32nd Rochdale Rainbows was presented with the Lancashire South East County Award in recognition of her contribution to the event.

Michelle Wood added: “Thank you to Krys and all the volunteers who go out of their way to give girls such great opportunities.”
