Young Leaders – Community Project

Our Young Leaders have taken part in assemblies during the past week to highlight the project they have planned as part of their community project which is to support Rochdale Foodbank. I think this shows an excellent community endeavor, and supported by Mr Fallows and our school community, should prove to be a rewarding experience. You can help by sending into school suitable items which can be included and be taken to the Foodbank.

Thank you to parents and carers for your feedback on the recent easter holiday club programme which was very positive indeed. I know the team are delighted with the comments and will be working hard to ensure that the next holiday club programme is equally well received. A reminder that updates on any aspect of the extended schools provision can be found on the school website.

Spotlight on Safeguarding

Thank you to the parents who attended our E Safety and Radicalisation presentation given by Mrs Haworth, Deputy Headteacher and Yasin Khan from the authority. It highlighted the work we are doing with students and parents on issues related to Safeguarding. I am sure you will have found the workshop interesting.

Blue 7 / Inclusion group has been on a litter pick as part of the ‘Our Responsibility’ topic in Citizenship lessons. They collected four bags of rubbish from The Street and the MUGA using special ‘clean for Queen’ purple bin bags.

Green 7 group has been working hard in Computing lessons. They have been going round school asking questions for a survey about using the Internet.
They are going to put the information they collect into a pictogram or a pie chart.

Students from 7A tutor group were the first tutor group to present part of the KS3 assembly this week. Students delivered a presentation on the safeguarding word of the week – Online Safety. Well done to Jake, George, Tia, Noah, Subhaan, Alex and Lynden

KS4

4C have been busy digging and planting, potting and weeding at Hopwood Hall College. They also cleared an area of plants to be re-potted. All the work has been independently and with a great deal of enthusiasm!

4C have also been learning about democracy. The whole class had to write their own Manifesto about what their values are and how they might improve the school.
The class had great ideas. Each student had to say what they stood for the class had to vote for who they wanted as the class Prime Minister.   We had a tie which lead to a revote for the most popular candidates. Jack and Josh had the biggest number of votes. They had a debate to gain more votes. Josh is now our class PM. Congratulation to Josh!!!

Students from SEB enjoyed shopping for ingredients for their cookery lesson and a visit to the Burrs Park to make the most of the sunshine! They saw some very friendly ducks whilst they were there too!

Well finally we have some action! The Chilli plants are finally emerging from the soil! The Chilli plant named Mrs Peel is showing a particularly vigorous spurt and is currently in first position!

KS5

Recently a group of students from REEC were challenged to make a piece of garden furniture for a member of staff. The group researched the item and set out a plan to buy the materials as cheaply as possible and then began the build. The finished piece drew lots of attention and the member of staff was overjoyed. She commented: “The finished article is absolutely fantastic. It’s that good my next door neighbour (who is a retired joiner) has built one and it is nowhere near as good as the students’ one.” Additionally, the students were able to build a far more robust piece of furniture for a fraction of the price of local garden centres. RRP was £120 and the students made and sold it for £60, making a £40 profit. The project was a huge success with the students learning different skills and informing staff that they enjoyed the whole process.
