Rochdale residents visit Longley Lane recycling facility

Date published: 14 May 2016

A group of Rochdale Central residents visited the Longley Lane recycling facility in Sharston, Manchester on Wednesday (11 May).

The visit gave the residents first-hand experience of what happens to the waste that they put in their recycling bins, how these are separated and processed into raw materials to make new products.

The visit included a briefing from the education team and a hands-on activity which highlighted a number of things the residents were doing wrong in terms of identifying the right bin for the right stuff. This helped to remove a lot of confusion with regards to recycling.

A tour round the mixed recycling installation showed the actual operation involved in separating the metals, glass, and plastics and how these are processed for further use.

Habibul Ahad, BACP Centre Manager, said that the visit was designed to bring about a positive change in the ‘recycling behaviour’ of residents.

The visit was organised by BACP (Bangladesh Association and Community Project) as part of its Environmental Project funded by Rochdale Township.
