High flying Hornets Go Green for Springhill Hospice

Date published: 10 May 2016

Rochdale Hornets took to the pitch on Sunday at Spotland Stadium to show their support for Springhill Hospice’s annual Go Green fundraiser.

Topping the table with an unbeaten record in their last eight games, the players took on superhero status to become the Green Hornets, swapping their customary hooped shirts for their pre-match warm up and wearing instead the colour closely associated with Springhill Hospice.

Hornets Chief Executive, Ryan Bradley, said: “Supporting Go Green Day has become a tradition for the Club. Springhill Hospice do a great job and we are always delighted to give them our support.”

Fundraising in the stands by volunteers from the Hospice at Home service raised more than £140.

Springhill Hospice is inviting everyone in the Rochdale borough to embrace their colour, green, for the day on Friday 13 May 2016. It’s a chance to have fun and help raise much needed funds to support the work that the Hospice does.

Barbara Lloyd, Community Support Fundraiser, said: “The great thing about Go Green Day is that everyone can choose what they do and how they do it. Hold a cake bake, fancy dress, football match, aerobics class, party night, or quiz. Just theme it green and go for it – cup cakes, comic characters or cocktails, the choice is endless.”

Care at Springhill Hospice is provided free of charge and costs are covered by raising over £3 million each year – approximately £8,200 a day.

Julie Halliwell, Springhill Hospice Chief Executive, said: “Around £7 out of every £10 comes from fundraising in the community. This includes donations, our charity shops, the Hospice lottery and events such as Go Green, and we are very grateful to all who give us such wonderful support.”
