REAG members clean Rochdale Canal
Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG), working with Rhys Wynne, Community Roots Project Co-ordinator of the Canal & River Trust, cleaned the banks of Rochdale canal from Lock 50 to the bridge near Kingsway.
They collected cans, footballs, rubbish, naans, chic peas, dead fish and even a washing machine.
Members of REAG say they feel strongly that people should be educated about the importance of keeping canal water clean and environmental laws covering canals and rivers should be enforced.
The contaminated water endangers the lives of birds and ducks.
Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, secretary Rochdale Environmental Action Group, said: “The group feel that intruding branches of the trees should be trimmed, flowers should be planted and benches installed for people to view the beauty of the canal.”
