Falinge Park High School Robot Orchestra

Date published: 04 May 2016

On Tuesday 3 May, four Year 10 pupils teamed up with Manchester University to create an 'instrument' for the upcoming Robot Orchestra.

Dylan Hassett, Portia Sastawanyuk, Leon Whittle and Tehzib Janjua are all studying GCSE Computer Science so decided, along with their teacher Mr Hodgson, to attempt to make an instrument involving a Raspberry Pi and drone.

A morning of intensive electrical engineering and programming saw the team create a digital theremin. This works by checking the distance the drone is away from the Raspberry Pi using ultrasonic sensors and depending on the distance, affects the note or sound that is being played.

This will now be passed onto Siemens who are putting together all of the instruments in the robot orchestra as part of the celebrations of Manchester being the European City of Science 2016. For more details of this event please visit: http://www.robotorchestra.co.uk/

Mr Hodgson and the Computing Musicians are now looking to see how the technology they have developed can be adapted to create Falinge Park High School’s very own robot orchestra!
