Music students create CD as part of studies

Date published: 26 April 2016

An ‘X factor’-style audition was held at Whitworth Community High School as music students selected artistes for their coursework CD.

Students of all ages proved they had got talent as they sang and played instruments to earn a place.

Georgia Atherton, 14, not only helped to create the CD, she also sang a solo of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love and a duet with Samantha Houghton, 15, of Rhianna’s Stay.

She said: “We put an invitation on the form PowerPoint asking for people to audition.

“We also wrote letters for those who did not make it through the audition.”

In true X Factor-style the students also combined some artistes that were similar to create a Year 7 singing group and a brass band ensemble.

The CD cover was designed by Brogan McGarry after each student created artwork and they all had a vote on, which was best.

Georgia added: “We recorded the CD in the school’s recording studio and we took a lesson to record each track because they had to rehearse and we had to make sure it was perfect.”

Technical expert was Dan Crook Data Manager, the school’s own YouTube sensation Sian Morton sang and also assisted with recording and the whole project was overseen by Assistant Headteacher Andrew Oliver.

Curby Newsham, 14, said: “As part of our GCSE course work we could either feature in the Christmas concert or produce our own CD; which is what we chose to do.

“We now all have copies that we will be selling in school.”

The proceeds from the sale of CDs will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
