Were you there when Danny Kaye played Champness Hall?

Date published: 25 April 2016

Sixty years ago on Saturday 12 May 1956 international entertainer Danny Kaye appeared at Champness Hall.

The evening was organised by the United Nations Association because Danny was UNICEF's first 'ambassador-at-large'. UNICEF had been formed 10 years previously by the United Nations as an emergency fund for humanitarian aid for children around the world.

Danny Kaye had just starred in perhaps his most famous film, 'The Court Jester' and was doing a 50,000 mile tour of ten countries.

Before Danny Kaye appeared on stage at the hall, the capacity audience was entertained by Rochdale Municipal Grammar School for Girls Choir.

Danny was so impressed with the choir's singing that he asked to join in with them.

After this, Danny spoke seriously to the audience about the important work of UNICEF with needy children of the world.

During the day, prior to the event Danny Kaye toured the children's wards of local hospitals.

Were you there that evening on stage with Danny Kaye at Champness Hall?

Or did Danny visit you in hospital?

If so, Tracey Holden who is working with the Champness Hall Trust to bring life back to this famous building, would love to hear from you.
