Petrus Sleep Out: Sleeping rough to raise funds for the homeless

Date published: 22 April 2016

Over 40 people are sleeping rough tonight (Friday 22 April) to raise money for Rochdale homeless charity Petrus.

People gathered with their sleeping bags at Spotland Stadium at 7,00pm to meet with charity workers and find a sleeping spot for the night, in the hope of raising thousands for the charity which helps the homeless people of the borough.

The Petrus Sleep Out event is now in its second year and with 46 participants is almost double the number from the event this time last year.

Mayoress of Rochdale, Cecile Biant has taken part in both events and has expressed her commitment to raising funds for those who have to sleep rough for real.

She said: “We are all sleeping out tonight in the cold but for us it is just one night. I think that coming out here and really doing it helps to bring it home, what it’s like for all those people who have to do it on a daily basis.

“I’ve packed my warm clothes and I am ready to take part in the sleep out because it is for a very good cause, and we should do everything we can to help those less fortunate.”

“It is great to see so many people here tonight who care about this charity and want to help make a difference. This is one of the Mayor’s charities and it is for good reason. Thank you everyone for your support.”

Mayor of Rochdale, Surinder Biant said: “The people of Rochdale have come together tonight to recognise what a good cause this really is, and it makes me proud to see so many people taking part.

“Hopefully we have raised a decent amount of money for Petrus, probably more than last year because there are so many more people here.

"Tonight the weather is forecast to be clear and cold, but we should spare a thought for those who are sleeping rough night after night in all kinds of weather conditions.”

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk was unable to attend the event due to preparation for the London Marathon this weekend, where he is also raising money for Petrus. He said: “I have always been a great supporter of Petrus and I have seen first hand the incredible work the charity does to help vulnerable people.

“The Sleep Out is a fantastic event which helps fund valuable front line services and raises awareness of the growing problem of homelessness in Rochdale and across Greater Manchester.

“Every credit to Rochdale AFC for supporting this event and well done to everyone who is doing their part and getting involved.”
