Cronkeyshaw Common
Travellers have set up camp on Cronkeyshaw Common, the section bordered by Whitworth Road, Mizzy Road, Whitehall Street (actually Further Heights Road) and Cronkeyshaw Road.
The council installed posts round the common to try to discourage travellers from entering, but they have been removed.
Mark Widdup, Director Neighbourhoods at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “As soon as we became aware that travellers had entered Cronkeyshaw Common, we served them with a notice to leave.
“As they did not comply with this notice, we are now in the process of applying for a court order.
“If this is granted, the travellers will be required to leave within 24 hours of the order being served on them.
“If they ignore the court order, we will remove them from the area.
“This whole process is expected to take around one week.
“We installed posts at this site to try to discourage travellers from entering, but they have been removed.
“We have also erected a temporary traveller site in the borough, but travellers have chosen not to make use of this site.”
