Questioned about sending sex messages to a 17-year-old girl, Mr Danczuk said he is confident he won’t be expelled from the Labour Party because he “hasn’t done anything wrong”. He said the story was a “tabloid construct” and that "the idea she came to me inquiring about a job just isn’t true”.

However, Ms Houlihan subsequently took to Twitter to publish a copy of her asking Mr Danczuk for a job.

On the matter of him being ordered to repay more than £11,000 in wrongly claimed expenses, Mr Danczuk told Ms Derbyshire that he had made an “honest mistake”.

Mr Danczuk added: “The important point is that Ipsa now accepts these rules around accommodation and around children aren’t fit for purpose and they are talking about revising them and I think that’s what they need to do.”

A spokesperson for Ipsa told Politics Home: “IPSA does not accept that the rules around accommodation and around children aren’t fit for purpose.

“We have not committed to changing any part of the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses, including any rules on dependants, but will be consulting on all aspects of the Scheme in early summer.”

Mr Danczuk also remains under investigation by police over an accusation of rape which he denies and says is "malicious".
